GRAHAM FITKIN “REEL” WINS STAGE WORKS PRIZE AT BRITISH COMPOSER AWARDS 2009

Ricordi London composer Grahm Fitkin has won the 2009 Stage Works prize at the British Composer Awards, presented by BASCA and sponsored by PRS For Music in association with BBC Radio 3.
Fitkin’s ballet score, Reel, took the prize in a competitive shortlist that also
featured Harrison Birtwistle’s The Minotaur and George Benjamin’s
Into the Little Hill. Reel, with choreography by Fitkin’s regular collaborator
Jonathan Watkins, was premiered in May 2008 at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury
Studio under the title Stop me when I’m stuck.
The jury commented that Reel is a piece by by a composer with a “clear and original musical voice. It is inventive, elegant and witty, and demonstrates a perfect partnership between music and dance.”
Fitkin and Watkins’ next work for the Royal Ballet will be premiered on 19 February 2010 on the main stage of the Royal Opera House.
